The sprint sensation wasted no time celebrating as her new mark caught the eye of an Olympic great.

Australian sprint star Torrie Lewis has cracked another new national record on her indoor debut — just over a year to the day since she broke out in the 100m arena.

The 20-year-old made it to the semi-finals in her preferred distance of 200m at the Paris Olympics last year but on Wednesday showed off the sprint power that propelled her to rising stardom.

In her first event since September last year, Lewis ran 7.14 seconds to claim 60m silver at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meet in Belgrade.

Lewis had in fact already bettered Taylah Cruttenden’s previous Australian 60m record of 7.24 seconds, which was set outdoors only two weeks ago, when she ran 7.22 in the heat.

But her 7.14 in the final set an impressive new standard.

Olympic great Sally Pearson had also recorded an unofficial time of 7.16 in 2011 — and Lewis’s run quickly caught her eye.

“Well done Torrie,” Pearson wrote.

Lewis wasted no time celebrating on Instagram herself, sharing highlights and updating her bio to now read “100m and 60m Australian record holder”.

She was only 0.02 seconds short of claiming the gold medal in Belgrade after being pipped by Italian Zaynab Dosso despite a barnstorming finish.

Lewis’s new mark is the fourth fastest time set in 2025 so far — but more importantly it earned direct qualification to the World Athletics Indoor Championships set to take place in March.

The feat continued a strong start to the year for Australia’s athletics stars.
