Andrew Johns

NRL Immortal | Newcastle Knights Legend | Dual Dally M Medal Winner

Andrew Johns is widely regarded as one of the greatest rugby league players of all time — a generational talent whose vision, skill, and competitive drive redefined the modern game. His influence on rugby league extends far beyond his playing days, earning him recognition as an NRL Immortal and one of the most technically gifted playmakers in the sport’s history.

Born and raised in Newcastle, Johns made his first-grade debut for the Knights in 1993 and went on to play his entire 249-game NRL career with the club. A two-time premiership winner (1997, 2001), Johns was the heartbeat of the Knights’ golden era, guiding the team to glory with his trademark kicking game and unmatched game management.

Johns represented New South Wales in 23 State of Origin matches and Australia in 26 Tests, where he consistently delivered on the biggest stages. He was named Dally M Player of the Year in 1998 and 1999, won three Dally M Halfback of the Year awards, and claimed the Golden Boot as the world’s best player in 1999.

After retiring in 2007, Johns transitioned into coaching and commentary, becoming one of the sport’s most respected analysts and mentors. He has worked closely with several NRL clubs and representative teams, including the New South Wales Blues, where his strategic insight and technical expertise have helped shape the next generation of elite halves.

Inducted as the eighth Rugby League Immortal in 2012 and later appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), Johns’ legacy is defined not only by his on-field brilliance but by his ongoing contribution to the growth and understanding of the game.

As of 2025, Johns continues to influence rugby league through his coaching, media work, and advocacy, remaining one of the sport’s most iconic and enduring figures.
